General Assembly

Report of the General Assembly (GA) of UIAA –the International Mountaineering and
Climbing Federation held on 8th Oct 2011

at Kathmandu, Nepal

The General Assembly (GA) of the Union of the International Alpine Associations was held on Saturday 8th Oct 2011 at Soaltee Crown Plaza Hotel, Kathmandu, Nepal. Lt Col Manzoor Hussain (Retd), President ACP alongwith Mr Muhmmad Nasir Awan, member ACP Executive Council represented ACP at GA of UIAA which continued till late in the evening. The GA was attended by 62 member federations from 50 countries and was chaired by Mr Jordi Colomer (from FEDME Spain), Vice President UIAA due to sudden illness of President UIAA Mike Mortimer (from Canada). ACP which was attending GA after lapse of many years was welcomed.
The Secretary General Nico de Jong (from Dutch federation) started the proceedings.  After approval of the minutes of the GA held on the 9th October 2010 in Bormio, Itlay were approved Annual Report of the President UIAA was presented by the Secretary General. This was followed by UIAA office report on its performance. The Audit report and the financial plan for 2012 was approved after some discussion. UIAA commissions on Access, Medical, Mountaineering, Mountain Protection, Safety, Youth and Sports presented their reports. Sports Commission highlighted the World Cup and other Ice Climbing Competitions held in winter of 2010. On the occasion the Chairman of Working Groups on Expeditions (Mr Mark Richey) and Traditional Climbing (Doug Scott) presented their reports. On recommendation by the Expedition working group GA decided to upload presentation made by President ACP on the UIAA website. ACP nominated Mr Nasir Awan, Member ACP Executive Council on the UIAA Youth Commission which was agreed to by the UIAA Executive Board.

Later, ACP strongly supported and voted in favour of the Kosovo (a Muslim country) for its membership in UIAA which was approved. At the same time few other associations and institutions were also admitted as Associate members of the UIAA. As all the Executive Board meetings and GA were already planned therefore ACP could not offer holding any of its meetings in Pakistan. It was however opined during the GA that Expeditions group should be converted into UIAA Expedition Commission which was the case few years back and ACP should play a positive role in its functioning. It was however sad that honorary membership of Mr Ang Tshering Sherpa could not be approved due to two negative votes in the secret ballot. ACP earlier had strongly supported the candidature of Mr Ang Tshering Sherpa, former President NMA and UAAA, for this slot and had expressed its strong objection on UIAA secret voting system on the issue, which however could not be changed due to the existing UIAA Article on the subject. The amendments in various UIAA articles were deferred till next GA. The GA concluded with vote of thanks to the chair.
