Report on UAAA General Assembly held at Kathmandu, Nepal on 9th Oct 2010

The General Assembly (GA) of the Union of the Asian Alpine Associations was held on Sunday 9th Oct 2011 at Soaltee Crown Plaza Hotel, Kathmandu, Nepal. The GA was chaired by UAAA President Mr Lee Injeong who is also President of the Korean Alpine Federation (KAF). Mr Mike Mortimer President UIAA was also invited to oversee the proceedings of the UAAA GA which was attended by about 20 mountaineering and climbing associations from 16 Asian countries. ACP delegation comprised President ACP Manzoor Hussain Lt Col (Retd) and ACP Executive Council members Mr Mohammad Nasir Awan and Mr Ayaz Ahmad Shigri. 

After opening remarks by President UAAA and approval of the minutes of the last GA, all member associations presented their activity reports. President ACP, who is also the founding member of the UAAA, presented ACP activities report for years 2010 and 2011 which was well appreciated by the delegates. ACP President further highlighted that in line with UAAA charter to promote friendship and harmony between the mountaineering and climbing communities of the Asian Associations, ACP jointly with China Tibet Mountaineering Association (CTMA) launched seven joint Pakistan China expeditions from 1997 to 2007 including Mt Everest (1997) and to all the five Pakistani peaks rising above 8000 metres. In the same spirit ACP shall be launching Joint China Pakistan expedition to a Pakistani peak in 2012, in cooperation with China Mountaineering Association (CMA).

After presentation of the activity reports President ACP presentation report on the Flood Relief activities undertaken by ACP in Gilgit Baltistan. On the occasion the ACP delegation thanked all the UAAA members for their donations for the flood victims in the mountain areas. ACP delegation especially thanked KAF for donating warm clothing for the flood affected population of the mountain areas in Skardu, around Nanga Parbat and the Atabad lake in Hunza. ACP President through his multimedia presentation briefed the Asian delegates about the the Relief Distribution conducted in the mountain areas by ACP during 2010 and 2011 incurring expenditure from ACP resources, much more than the UAAA donation. The report was well appreciated by the UAAA delegates.

            Later the accounts of UAAA were presented by UAAA treasurer Mr Hwang Hanks from Taipei and the future programmes of UAAA were discussed. On the occasion committees constituted by UAAA on Expeditions, Environments and Youth also presented their reports. On the occasion KAF presented the details of the World Cup Ice Climbing Competition held in Seoul during last winter. Towards the conclusion of the GA, ACP offered to host UAAA GA at Skardu, Pakistan in September 2013 which was accepted by the UAAA GA.

            On the occasions elections were held for the UIAA officials. UAAA delegates unanimously elected Mr Lee Injeong, President KAF was relected as President of UAAA for another ternm of two years.
